Why It Matters

More Than a Bike. A Memory That Lasts.

For many kids, a bike is their first taste of real freedom. It means rides with friends, trips to the park, and the pride of something that is truly their own. For families going through a hard season, a new bike under the tree can be out of reach.


That is where you come in. Every bike donated through Hancock's Bikes for Kids goes to a child in our community through Kids First of the Carolinas. You will never meet the child who rides away on your bike, but you will know you made their Christmas morning brighter.

A Charlotte Tradition for More Than 30 Years

Started by a Local Legend, Carried On by Our Community

Hancock's Bikes for Kids was started by longtime WBT radio host John Hancock, a member of both the WBT and North Carolina Association of Broadcasters Halls of Fame. What began as one radio host's holiday mission has grown into one of Charlotte's most loved traditions.


Over the years, the drive has helped put more than 20,000 new bikes in the hands of local children. Even after John Hancock retired in 2019, WBT and our community kept the tradition rolling, and in a single recent year, donors brought in around 800 bikes.



Garage Door Doctor is proud to present this year's drive. We started in Charlotte in 2005, and helping our neighbors is part of who we are, both on the job and off it.

Putting Children First for More Than 37 Years

Kids First of the Carolinas was founded by Sharon Sanders on a simple belief: every child deserves hope, care, and opportunity. For more than 37 years, the organization has helped children and families across Charlotte, Union County, and beyond with holiday support, food, clothing, school supplies, and other essentials.


Kids First distributes the bikes from this drive through its storefront, making sure they reach local children who need them most.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Do bikes need to be new?

    Yes. Please donate new bikes only, so every child receives a gift that is safe and ready to ride.

  • What size bike should I buy

    Any size is welcome. Kids of all ages receive bikes, from young children who need training wheels to teenagers.

  • Who receives the bikes?

    Bikes go to local children identified by Kids First of the Carolinas and are distributed through its Charlotte storefront in time for the holidays.

  • Do I need to get out of my car to drop off a bike?

    No. Just drive up, and volunteers will help unload your bike for you.

  • Can I give money instead of a bike?

    Yes. Monetary donations must be made payable to Kids First of the Carolinas. You can give online at kidsfirstofthecarolinas.org/donation.
